Professor Timothy Rainer

Timothy Rainer has been a Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Cardiff University.  In 1986, he graduated from the University of Wales College of Medicine, and then trained in internal medicine and emergency medicine.  In 1996, he established an Accident and Emergency Medicine Academic Unit at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the first of its kind in Asia.  In 2015 he was appointed as Professor of Emergency Medicine at Cardiff University where he established the Emergency Medicine Academic Unit, the first of its kind in Wales. Throughout his career he has aimed to integrate the best available minds and expertise in order to answer real-world emergency medicine problems through teamwork and cross-disciplinary collaboration.  His practical, translational research has included clinical and molecular-based diagnostic and prognostic markers and pathways, applied haemodynamics, risk-stratification, clinical trials, systems analysis and clinical decision rules.  He continues to investigate roles for circulating nucleic acids and non-invasive haemodynamics in acute illness and injury. He is directly involved in the global development of emergency medicine, was Vice-President of the International Federation for Emergency Medicine (2016 – 2018), and has developed two Masters of Science programmes, two Post-graduate Diploma programmes, an intercalated Bachelors of Science programme and numerous courses.  He has supervised and trained over150 post-graduate students, including PhD/MD students.
