Emergency and Acute Medical Care in Over 16s: Service and Delivery Guideline NICE Committee

Julian Bion is the Professor of Intensive Care Medicine at the University of Birmingham. He provided front-line intensive care including nights and weekends for 35 years until moving to full-time research in 2018.  He chaired the NICE 094 guideline development committee on Service Delivery and Organisation for Emergency and Acute Medical Care (2014-17), and co-chaired the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges’ working group on Consultant-Led Care.  He was President of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (2006-8), Foundation Dean of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (2010-13), and is currently chief investigator for the NIHR-funded High-intensity Speciality Led Acute Care (HiSLAC) project evaluating seven day services.

  • Outlining new guidance published by NICE in March 2018 on ‘Emergency and acute medical care in over 16s: service delivery and organisation’
  • Reducing the need for hospital admissions and improving patient flow through advanced training for paramedics and the provision of community alternatives
  • Exploring the recommendations in the guidance, this includes recommendations on services within hospitals, alternatives to hospital care, transfers and discharges and monitoring hospital bed capacity
  • Discussing the implementation of the guidance and the impact it has had on emergency and acute care departments so far
