Gordon is the Chief Executive and has been with the College since December 2010.  His background is drawn from private, public and charity sectors.  He had a varied career with NatWest including working in Corporate Finance and in the NatWest Strategy Team.  He has worked for the Policy Innovation Unit at the Department for Education.  He then worked in the NHS at the Dental Practice Board (now subsumed into the NHS Payments Agency), has worked on secondment at the Department of Health Dental Policy Team, he set up and ran the Dental Complaints Service for the General Dental Council and before joining The Royal College of Emergency Medicine as their CEO was Director of Corporate Services at the General Dental Council. His brief here includes leading the team of over 40 staff, working closely with the Executive on policy matters and the Treasurer on the College finances. He is heavily involved in working up improvements to the College systems.  He spends a lot of his time working with the President and Policy Team on the challenges facing emergency medicine.

  • Ensuring workforce stability through 3 key measures: creating a better working environment, offering incentives and broadening the pool of available staff as outlined in the Workforce Stabilisation Best Practice Guidance
  • Discussing the role of the Emergency Care Improvement Programme (ECIP) in continuing enhancement of urgent and emergency services
  • Outlining strategies to work towards four-hour performance goals across urgent and emergency care departments and reduce waiting times
  • Exploring what strategies need to be put in place so that urgent and emergency care departments can improve their response to winter pressures in the long term
  • Assessing mental health service provisions in urgent and emergency departments and how to ensure that they are meeting demand
